DESCRIPTION:
The text is a compendium of shiphandling information written by a father and son team of pilots with contributions from several other pilots and shipmasters who provided material relating to their specialized skills. Good bridge practices in pilot waters and training techniques, including simulator training, are discussed so that the potential deck officer or master can develop the shiphandling skills essential to the marine profession.. Unique in its emphasis on the art of shiphandling and maneuvers for such vessels, it is a classic work designed to teach mariners and pilots practical shiphandling skills. The focus of this book is on large, modern commercial vessels. The fourth edition includes new information on squat and underkeel clearance in shallow water, bridge resource management for pilots, and discussions of new propulsion systems and hull types includ
"The ability to handle a ship, especially in confined waters, is one of the most demanding and satisfying of the mariner's skills. It is a skill both as old as the first ship and as new as the latest vessel to be launched."
S. Schenk Jr. said Shiphandling views from someone who really does it. As a Harbor Pilot who handles ships in and out on a daily basis, I recommend this book for someone who is going to get the hands on the job. It's stuffed with very helpful hints and tips that I still use after ten years on the profession. It could not be otherwise as the author is himself a pilot.Besides, the author's narrative is really smooth and humorou. "Shiphandling for the mariner" according to Pedro Jácome. A Standard in the Industry David Henderson This book is one of the standards of the industry. It has been overcome by the newer and flashier Nautical Institute books which cost more and have color pictures, but the information is largely a rehash of this text.
