Big, small things in life of an RAF airman High quality little book. I liked the topics picked by the author - boots, lucky charms, a Bible and of course their beloved dogs. It is difficult to image how these young kids from all social classes faced down the Nazi war machine. We forget the U.K. was a major innovator in high-performance fighter planes, aircraft engines, radar and many other advances that helped them hold out until the U.S. arrived. Of course their greatest weapon was Winston Churchill. I recommend this book to anyone interested . A Fine Tribute to the RAF Airman Military Warrior This beautifully illustrated book features stunning photos of the items that RAF personnel carried into war during the years 1939 to 1945. The book considers not only the heroic pilots who flew for Fighter and Bomber Command, but also the ladies who served as WAAFs and the ground crew who kept the planes flying. The illustrated introductory essay by historian Bill Howard is followed by fifty photos of the things that were carried into war. The photos depict everything from RAF flying helmets to good lu. James C said Excellent. For the price a very evocative book that. Excellent. For the price a very evocative book that captures the feel of the era. Coffee table quality without the size or price – which means it is far more likely to be taken along and read. Fills a similar niche for the RAF as the “National Naval Aviation Museum: The Historic Collection” book does for Naval Aviation. Highly recommended.
Many lost their lives in this hard-fought episode and in the four years of air campaigns that followed. As Prime Minister Winston Churchill put it, "Never was so much owed by so many to so few." In this beautifully illustrated tribute to "The Few," Bill Howard catalogs the objects upon which every wartime pilot depended, from the superstitious good-luck charm to the parachute on which his life may depend, and other poignant items relating to the air war.
