It looks at fasting through its spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects - in great detail. Fasting has been present in all the world's spiritual traditions and the author shares comments throughout the text about what the adherents of those traditions felt and discovered about fasting. I recently finished a water fast and would have benefitted a lot had I also read the book prior to doing the fast as it re enforces and inspires with the details of what is happening within a fast. For me, as a first time faster, I really wanted info on the facts of fasting, i.e. how to fast, what I should do, how much should I be drinking, water drinking, etc. This book has a very short section on this towards the end, only a few pages.
