DESCRIPTION:
This is very strong, fearless stuff, beautiful, with the right degrees of both vulnerability and threat. - Rhina P. Espaillat
Mitchell Geller said Erudite and erotic -- a paean to loving women. Mary Meriam has taken the proverbial "slender volume of verse" and turned up the heat -- a lot! -- making the title very apposite. I love all the poems, but have several favourites. The very first, "Who leaves me rootless," evoked an almost visceral response. Wow. Love, loss, rage, and resignation. Damn. I also went nuts over "Portrait of a Woman Revealing Her Breasts" for its sheer beauty of sound when I read it aloud, as much as for its tender eroticism. I loved the ghazal, "Anticipation's sweet." The only contemporary ghazals I have really loved have been Marilyn Hacker's, and Meriam's is just so well-executed! But my very favour. Abe Louise said Lesbian Aesthetics & Hot Poetry in Formal Clothes. Meriam's voice reminds me of Marilyn Hacker, Joan Larkin, Edna St. Vincent Millay -- as does her choice to use formal poetics and verse structures to express a radical, unbound eros of lesbian love. These poems are sparkling, captivating, relational, pithy and complete. Their accomplishment is in their wholeness, the deft turn of phrase, the perfect perfect rhyme, the sense of being led into a complex world by a voice who understands the landscape completely -- but is still in hot pursuit of the mystery..
