DESCRIPTION:
"A story of one of England's most fascinating and tragic sites" according to Gary Selikow. An exciting history of the imposing and dark Tower of London, full of exciting and tragic episodes and real life stories. It tells much of the history of England itself from the White Tower constructed on the orders of William the Conqueror in 1078. It has imprisoned such figures as Scottish and French kings, Richard II of England, the young princes and heirs to the throne imprisoned by Richard III, sir Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Lady Jane Grey, Elizabeth I before she was queen by her jealous and paranoid sister Bloody Mary I, Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Ra. A 1971 Newsweek "Wonders of Man" publication that I bought A 1971 Newsweek "Wonders of Man" publication that I bought as a followup to a trip to London and visit to the Tower and other historical and personal areas of interest. Since the historical part of the Tower hasn't changed since 1971, it served well. I reflect upon how in the 1,000 year history of the Tower the brief life of Henry VIII overshadowed and somehow epitomized its history. I wonder if we will understand ourselves well enough to save our species, civilization, and life as we know it on Earth. It is a dark view from the Tower.. the leaning tower why did the chicken cross the road? I can't recommend this book. It's a cursory treatment that actually dates to 1971 and is probably long since rendered obsolete by fresh research.
