"love Hawaiian mysteries" according to V. A Ortiz. I am an avid mystery reader and my favorite are Hawaiian. So I bought this book. It is fantastic. He does a great job of taking you to Oahu and his characters are so believable. I am just about to order his next bookMahalo Mr. Plakcy.. Top notch police procedural Josh Lanyon I've actually posted on my Amazon plog about MAHU, so I won't go overboard here. I was surprised that this was a first novel (considering the flaws in my own first novel). I immediately warmed to the character of Kimo, a mixed-race cop who loves surfing as much as he loves being a cop. He's smart and capable and very appealing--despite the fact that he starts out the novel with an alarming lapse of judgement.Plakcy does a great job with setting (Hawaii) and with procedural detail. But it's the character of Kimo--his strugg. "Try this for a little Aloha spirit" according to Anthony Bidulka. I love reading books that have a strong sense of place - especially when that place is somewhere I know well - in this case, Honolulu, Hawaii. And Mahu not only get the place right, but everything else as well, including the introduction of a most original and charming main character: surfer guy cop Kimo.Congratulations, Neil; a job well done and I join the ranks of fans waiting for more.

Mahu---a generally negative Hawaiian term for homosexuals---introduces a unique character to detective fiction. Kimo Kanapa'aka is a handsome, mixed-race surfer living in Honolulu, a police detective confronting his homosexuality in an atmosphere of macho bravado within the police force. Fast-paced, intricately plotted, thoroughly enjoyable, this is a sexy, surprisingly moving mystery about discovering oneself as much as catching a killer.. A man of intelligence, strength, honesty, resourcefulness, and intense dedication to the people of Hawaii, Kimo is a hard-boiled hero you will never forget

His writing has been published in numerous magazines. He lives Florida. . Neil Plakcy is Assistant Professor of English on the South Campus of Broward Community College
