DESCRIPTION:
About a Dorothy who never gets to leave Kansas In The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz by L. Frank Baum the fictional Dorothy spends just four pages in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry before a cyclone takes her to Oz, a country of marvelous beauty. This novel explores the life of a fictional Dorothy who never escapes the harsh reality of her life in Kansas except in the world of her imagination.WAS mixes a historian's dedicated search for details with a fictional story that spans a century to. "Sad and moving. But uplifting as well." according to RICHARD D. WILLIAMS. Where to begin? Its rare that a book can move me to tears but this one did. Its a little disjointed at first but all comes together after the first 100 pages. Aids is not the central theme, after having read Child Garden, I wonder if cancer and terminal illness are not a central theme in Mr Ryman's books. There is mystery as well, so what does happen next? I highly recomend this, and any book by this author. Looking forward to AIR, which I hope. Bizdevlady said A wild ride in the land of Oz. If you have ever wondered where the inspiration to write fiction comes from then this is a must read. Geoff Ryman's take on the background of The Wizard of Oz is thought provoking, interesting and compelling. I could not put this book down. The only reason I would not give this 5 stars is that it took me a while to get into the story. Otherwise, a great read!
From Publishers Weekly Ryman's darkly imaginative, almost surreal improvisation on L. Frank Baum's Oz books combines a stunning portrayal of child abuse, Wizard of Oz film lore and a polyphonic meditation on the psychological burden of the past. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"A moving lament for lost childhoods and an eloquent tribute to the enduring power of art."—The New York TimesA haunting novel exploring the lives of characters intertwined with The Wizard of Oz: the "real" Dorothy Gale; Judy Garland's unhappy fame; and Jonathan, a dying actor, and his therapist, whose work at an asylum unwittingly intersects with the Yellow Brick Road.Geoff Ryman is the author of The King's Last Song, Air, The Child Garden, The Unconquered Country, and Paradise Tales
