Bailey said A true insight to the extraordinary relationship between a man and his dog. If you are a dog lover you will fall in love with Shilo and his story. He was an extraordinary dog and his relationship with Mario is just beautiful. I loved the insightfulness of Mario and his passion for conservation. He knows how to truly draw you into the landscape and Africa's beautiful animals. This is ultimately their story but tells of so much more. I felt I had a better understanding of Rangers and the important part they play in conservation. I loved reading about the mutual respect, trust and love these to have for each other, and the loyalty they both prove to each other is magical. I als. About the man first, the dog second Frankus Note that the title isn't just "The Black Dog." This book is more of an autobiography in which a dog plays a supporting role than a story about a dog. I absolutely loved the parts about Shilo, but there was also a lot in here about the author's aspirations, his career, his hobbies (trout fishing, wildfowl shooting, amateur archaeology), and his pet peeves. Some of this is interesting, some just OK, and some of this is tiresome. It does give a perspective into a life and career we don't normally see, and overall it's a recommendation, but it's hard to give it more than three stars. If you're a dog lo. "Bushveld and dogs at their best" according to Kirstin Otten. the book was charming and I found absorbing. If you love the African Bushveld you will identify with the place and love the experiences related
