DESCRIPTION:
Don't take this the wrong way, but when people look at your skin, all they're seeing is a sheath of dead cells called the stratum corneum. Makes you look at Playboy in a whole new light, doesn't it? That and other interesting facts about the epidermis come out in this witty, accessible, and highly personal book by two dermatologists who happen to be married to each other. After reading The Life of the Skin, you'll never look at yours the same way again.
In the tradition of Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses and Oliver Sacks's The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, this witty and elegantly written book offers fascinating new insights about our skin--and ourselves.Leading dermatologists Arthur Balin and Loretta Pratt Balin take us on a wonderful ride beneath our most visible, revealing, and overlooked organ: the skin. The authors highlight the skin's functions in sensory perception and the immune system. They detail the amazing ability of the skin to communicate everything from sexual signals to the presence of dysfunctions and problems within the body. They explain why babies smell nice, why we get wrinkles, and how wounds heal. And they tell fascinating and moving stories from their patients' lives and their own--from the schoolteacher whose skin turned into a stiff shell, to the facelift Arthur performed on his own father. With the Balins' passion for their subject and care for their patients bringing life to every page, this unique book will change the way you look at yourself forever.
"Extremely cautious book presents an incomplete view of" according to A Customer. No one can argue with the credentials of the authors of this interesting and engaging book. It is certainly an interesting account of the life of a dermatologist and some interesting case studies. However, if you are looking for a book on the effects of sunlight on human health I would urge you to look elsewhere. "This was an easy read and really informative. Great Book!" according to A Customer. I learned alot about people and issues with skin that I never understood before. This book was both entertaining and informative and anyone who wants to learn more about their body and their skin should read it.. David Rousmaniere (drousmanie@aol.com) said Good intro to Dermatology. Very readable look at dermatology and why healthy skin is so important. It is told though cases where the authors were the physicians.
