DESCRIPTION:
There are guidelines on how to make herbal preparations, and how to use herbs in compresses and poultices. The guide provides an A to Z of common ailments - from allergies to wounds - which can be effectively and safely treated using herbal medicine. The author also discusses several non-herbal products, such as vinegar and yoghurt. This is a detailed guide to medicinal herbs for horses and how they can help in the treatment of a wide range of common ailments. Advice is given on how remedies are selected and dosages determined, bearing in mind that most herbs take time to bring about a healing reaction. Throughout, the author underlines the importance of veterinary consultation, explaining how herbs can be used to complement conventional methods. It draws on research in herbal medicine as well as in traditional plant-based remedies. To provide background information, a materia medica lists the properties of 50 readily obtainable herbs, giving details on habitat, collection, actions and uses, along with folklore and case histories. In the final part of the handbook the author describes a range of alternative therapies which can be used alongside conventional or herbal medicine.
Good starting point for learning about herbs and horses This is my first book I have been able to read on herbal remedies for horses. It is conscise, with a section describing many popular herbs and their uses, along with a section of common aliments and their treatments. The information provided on other forms of alternative therapies is a little skimpy. But it is called Modern Horse Herbal, and the herbal information is excellent.. great reference book casie m bazay Really enjoy all the useful information in this book. It's a great reference for any horse owner who is interested in a natural approach to horse care.. Sandra Cointreau said Excellent reference for every horse owner. The herbs that Hilary Self writes about really do work. I've used this book with great results, bringing back to ridability an old horse that was lame and unridable for 5 years, calming another that spooked too easily, helping sinus congestion on anotherand more. Not all viable horse herbs are covered in this book. Nevertheless, this excellent reference points the equestrian and veterinarian in the right direction to those that the horse will eat and digest most readily. Horses can be finicky, but she writes about the herbs they most find palatible.
