DESCRIPTION:
Loved it As the tittle suggest, this book covers strictly Steam of N. America. If you only had room for one book on the subject, this would be my choice. Not a boring read as some books on the subject are. Very informative without the mundane repetition of useless technical details . Many great color photos of restored locos as well as black and whites of originals. Mostly in action rather than profiles of lifeless engines. The original b&w's show great . C.K. said Got this for my dad. He thinks it is great and has been quoting facts to the whole family for weeks now. We are all more knowledgable for this book whether we wanted to be or not.. A beatiful book for anyone interested in steam locomotives The Steam Locomotive is an excellent reference for anyone interested in steam powered locomotives. The book is fairly large, just over 10" X 10", and contains nearly 200 photographs. The photographs are all high quality, and range from black and white period photos of steam locomotives to full color contemporary photos of restored locomotives. There are a few photos taken in maintenance shops that show some of the inner workings of the boilers,
They traveled across the country, powered the Industrial Revolution, and hauled the U.S. into the nuclear age. On beautiful display are the Virginia & Truckee 2-6-0, named Empire, a magnificent example of a post-Civil War steam locomotive; the charming B&O 4-4-0, which was overhauled and tested for use in the motion picture The Wild, Wild West; the long-lived Burlington & Quincy 2-8-2 4960; and the 3751, which in 1991 climbed Cajon Pass for the first time since it was retired in the 1950s.. After they were finally displaced in the 1950s, many significant examples underwent restoration for historical societies, museums, and tourist railroads. With vintage black and white action views of the engines in use and color photos of restored cars, this tribute to the great American locomotive captures a century in the life of these big, fast land machines
