DESCRIPTION:
"A really decent book on Douglas high-speed research airplanes" according to William R. Mosby. I found this book to be a very readable, informative account of the development and testing of the Skystreak, Skyrocket, and Stiletto. I appreciated the extent to which the author sought out and included drawings of the subjects, especially the internal arrangem. Fascinating reading!!! If you are a fan David W. Temple Fascinating reading!!! If you are a fan of the test piloting and aviation history in the immediate post-World War II years and into the 1950s you should get this book. There are a lot of details on the D-558-1 "crimson test tube" as well as the -2 version plus t
The Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak, D-558-2 Skyrocket, and X-3 Stiletto were among the first aircraft to blend airframe to powerplant in ways that would set the standard for many modern-day aircraft designs. In this quest for knowledge, records were broken, mysteries solved, and a life was lost.. These aircraft were at the forefront of a renaissance in aeronautical discovery, the likes of which have not been seen since. Aeronautical history was made with these aircraft as they explored transonic and supersonic flight. Gas turbine technology gave birth to the turbojet engine during the 1940s, ushering in the jet age. But aeronautical advances weren't limited to propulsion technology - the time was also right for incorporating a swept wing into a full-scale aircraft. One of the D-558-2 Skyrockets even became the first manned aircraft to exceed Mach 2. Paralleling turbojet development, the fledgling rocket engine was ready to make a grandiose debut
(Scale Aircraft Modellling 2005-08-01) . -IPMS, September 2005, reviewed by Michael Scott (IPMS 2005-09-19)Throughout the book there are plenty of very high quality photos, both in black and white and in color. More than an evening's quick read, this is a solid, well researched and well written book about three important aircraft. Specialty Press has produced an excellent book that I have to give my highest recommendation. Considering the immense quality of research and publication, the price is an absolute bargain. Don't just think about getting this book, buy it. -Internet Modeler, June 2005, reviewed by Chris Banyei-Riepl (Internet Modeler 2005-06-02)Like all Specialty Press books on X-craft, this one has a complete development history of each aircraft with all the important flights and interesting experiences fully documented.
