DESCRIPTION:

I needed this book! It's wonderful. Freeman's work is held together by the sheer force of her images rather than by conventional syntax and punctuation, or even by poetic lineage. Jan Freeman has written an extraordinary piece of work" DOROTHY ALLISON, AUTHOR OF BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA"If happiness, tenderness, grandiosity, etc. My suggestion? If you're a lesbian (oh hell, even if you're not) take Freeman to bed with you for a few months, read a poem a night, bask in its complexity and fullness, then spend the final months of your ninth life loving it again." "A haunting collection" according to Frankie. Poems filled with songs, chants, nursery rhymes; pressured lines and light lines; lesbian desire, humor, the universality of pain -- This is a haunting collection.. Not My Idea of How to Handle a Difficult Subject Patricia Johnson Simon Says by Jan Freeman was too sing-songy for my tastes. Handling touchy subjects like abuse issues with this approach tends to discourage honesty around the issue. If I had understood that abuse was a theme in the book I would not have purchased these poems. That said, there were some solid poems on other subjects included in the collection. Use of a cat metaphor with certain other poems did not work in my humble opinion.
