Ashby's is one of the worst, if not the worst, I've encountered so far. Overall, the book seems to simply present a few ideal and specific scenarios, giving shallow explanations. There is no sense of a comprehensive or general coverage. This would be tolerable if the topics presented were covered in depth, but they aren't. Random ideas are presented with unjustified equations, and the reader is only able to learn about the specific scenario presented. The equations are also often labelled poorly and not explained at all. For example, there is an eq. Great introduction to Materials. Useful reference for those needing basic info. Very informative and easy to read/learn from! I am a Systems Engineer with an Electrical backgroundas such I like to pick up references for areas I'm not terribly familiar with, so I thought this would be a good choice.Overall, I've found it really handy! As a quick reference, it does fairly well for concepts - easily located via the index and equations - all stored in a handy appendix in the back. There are lots of tables of properties of common materials.I have actually now read most of it cover to cover and I have to say I find it well written - interesting enough to stick with and relatively easy to follow along and learn - nice properties in a text book, I must say! Better of man. It's the stories that set this one apart My first flip into this book led me to a story that has interested me for a long time - the mechanical failure that led to the space shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986. I knew the O-rings had failed, but this text examines in detail exactly what material properties were in play that allowed a part that had withstood so many successful missions to fail that particular morning. This is just one example - materials properties are handled throughout by citing interesting real-world examples, and following up with insightful examples/study problems. The text works as historical perspective, materials library, and classroom text/study guide.
